Texas Tech University Library Lubbock, TX | Summer 2021
The library’s needs & design vision
Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas enrolls nearly 40,000 students every year. Not surprisingly, the University Library is open more hours than any other building on campus — nearly 24 hours a day — making it the prime study spot for students any time of day.
The University design team was looking to install something new in the existing library space to create natural boundaries — without taking away from the clear sightlines and visual openness of the library’s safe-space feel.
In essence, the goal is to make the library a study-hub, with modern technology and a comfortable, flexible environment to study undisturbed or with friends. All in the same space.
Unique challenges & needs
The TTU staff and a local dealer they partnered with began to search for a creative, custom-fit solution to create more privacy for students, without making them feel completely shut off to the rest of the building. From the designer’s perspective, providing a semi-private study space meant working within the existing architecture of the space — and simply adding in space division solutions.
The dealer reached out to the Cronan team, and it quickly became clear that NxtWall was the custom, demountable, semi-private solution they were looking for.
NxtWall — the perfect fits
We partnered with Texas Tech and their dealer to provide a quick-to-install, flexible, modular solution. NxtWall was installed in the existing space to create multiple, smaller, semi-private study rooms throughout the library’s open floorplan.
The demountable walls allow silent, focused study to happen right beside group collaboration — separated by a sturdy visual barrier.
